BassCrack Jigs mission is to offer high quality jigs and jig heads at an affordable price.
Why Lead-Free?
Our lead free jig heads feature a unique bismuth-tin alloy that is much more expensive than lead—about five times more expensive. So we’re not using Bismuth/Tin to save money and increase profits.
In some states, it has become illegal to use lead in jigs and sinkers that weigh less than 1 ounce. These states have some form of law against leaded jigs and weights:
New Hampshire
New York
Maine
Massachusetts
Vermont
Washington
Michigan and Minnesota have considered banning lead, but have not.
What do you use instead of lead?
Bismuth/Tin—but not the one made for fishing lures, which is 57% bismuth and 42% tin. I found a Bismuth/Tin that is much much closer to the weight of lead. The alloy we use is close to 88% bismuth and 12% tin. This higher percentage of Bismuth give our BassCrack Jigs two benefits. First, the weight is almost identical to lead, but a touch lighter. That makes the material great for Neds, and allows us to offer a unique weight selection most other companies can’t. Second, and most importantly, we can cure the powder paint at a higher temp than is possible with the lighter, softer bismuth/tin that’s standard in the fishing industry. This makes our powder paint coating extremely durable!
How does it affect the jig head? Our Bismuth-Tin alloy is just a small fraction lighter than lead. Our alloy delivers an amazing feel for structure and ground contact. You really would never know unless we told you that they were lead free.
